We have a new world record! At yesterday’s bree We have a new world record!

At yesterday’s breeding evaluation in Hella, the stallion Viðar frá Skör scored a staggering 9,04 in total, making him the highest judged Icelandic horse ever.

Viðar is the epitome of the Icelandic gæðingur:

Not just stunningly beautiful and incredibly talented, but he also has that exceptionally good character which makes him a great horse for everyone to ride! During our photoshoot in early spring of 2021, he gave me a small but powerful sample of how much of a genius he is.

Massive congratulations to the owners Gitte&Flemming at Lindholm Høje Stutteri, breeder Karl Áki Sigurðsson, and trainer Helga Una Björnsdóttir. What a fabulous job!

I really do have the most amazing clients ❤️

It’s been a while…⠀ ⠀ First of all, thank It’s been a while…⠀
⠀
First of all, thank you so much for all of your kind words on my last post. They made this success even sweeter and they mean a lot to me 🙂⠀
⠀
Since many of you asked, here’s another winning entry – a selection from my series „Totem“, accompanied by this text:⠀
⠀
"It is said that in riding a horse, we borrow freedom.⠀
⠀
I'll add that by spending time with horses, we are granted a momentary glimpse into a world that's older and more complete than our merely human one, thus reuniting us with a cosmos full of sentient beings whose forms of intelligence are different, but no less important than ours.⠀
⠀
These images were taken in Iceland and Andalusia, two regions where horses are still an integral part of the national culture and soul.“⠀
⠀
More on this and other series on my website, link in bio.⠀

(Oops, last photo is cropped from portrait to landscape - stupid IG restrictions!)⠀

⠀
On a personal note:⠀
⠀
Tomorrow it’s been exactly six months since I broke my ankle falling off a young horse. An event that disrupted my plans on a major scale and challenged me in ways I never anticipated, even beyond the scope of this year.⠀
⠀
But at last, things seem to heal well and I’ve started riding (and walking) again. Not on Icelandic horses, mind you, but in a very nice stable where I can expand my horizon as a rider and focus on feeling my body again. Heck, we even have a riding hall where the max number of riders is 2… pure luxury 😄⠀
⠀
I am currently working with a young gelding and a mare that is being reintroduced to riding after some time as a breeding horse – and I’m enjoying it tremendously 🙂⠀
⠀
Do you want to know more about these two lovely guys?⠀

Proud to announce that this image won a 1st place Proud to announce that this image won a 1st place at the ND Awards 2021, one of the most prestigious international photo contests. Seeing my work compete successfully against such a strong field of photographers adds in a nice way to the experience of taking the image and I congratulate all the other winners on their magnificient work!⠀
⠀
This picture reminds me of a very good time in Northern Iceland last winter, where I had found a temporary home, escaping from Lockdown Germany:⠀
⠀
It was shot during an epic snow shower where you just close every possible zipper on your clothing and cover all but your eyes with hats, neckwarmers and whatnot, while the fierce winds are trying to tear everything off your body that’s not safely attached to it. ⠀
⠀
I love being outside during weather like that, it makes me feel alive like few other things. And as we photographers know, nasty conditions often make for the best photo opportunities… 🙂⠀
⠀⠀
The horses were not impressed at all, they preferred playing outside instead of seeking shelter. I got there right in time: Five minutes later, the sun was shining again.⠀

If you’ve been following me for some time, you might know that apart from all things Iceland and its horses, I am a big aficionada of the Spanish horse and the wonderful country they originate from.⠀
⠀
So during the last week, I was glued to my screen more time than I’d like to admit, watching the live broadcast from SICAB, the World Championships of Spanish Horses in Sevilla. And what a feast it was!⠀
⠀
I’m sending huuuge congrats to my friends in Spain for all of your successes, among them several World Champion titles and 2nd and 3rd positions. It was a pleasure watching all your tests!⠀
⠀
To Gustavo and team @cortijodesgarrahatos, Matilda @matildaschmechel and Yeguada Agrícola Peralta @spanishhorse, I am so happy for you and proud to get the chance to work with such diligent and talented people, both breeders and trainers. I can’t wait to see you all again!⠀

As we are heading into the darkest days of the yea As we are heading into the darkest days of the year, everything seems to calm down, to become slower, some even say to die.⠀
⠀
In a time and age where we have all but excluded the darkness from our surroundings, we are often fearful to find darkness in our souls as well. But we should embrace it, for it is the prerequisite to light. One cannot exist without the other.⠀
⠀
And just as the trees shed their foliage for it to become fertile soil in the future, we can use this time to shed what’s not serving us anymore, and feed the seeds of something new that is waiting inside, wanting to come out and thrive.⠀
⠀
Soon, the light will return, and it’s up to us to let it fall on well-prepared soil.⠀
⠀
How are you practicing self-care during this time of the year?⠀
⠀
In other news, my new international website is finally live! Go check it out by the link in my profile and if you like, tell me what you think. There are still a few loose ends to tie, but I’m working on it 😉⠀

🛑 Please read ‼️ As someone whose focus is 🛑 Please read ‼️

As someone whose focus is on Iceland content, I feel the need to post this although it’s off-topic from my usual stuff:

Today, another clueless tourist was swept into the sea at Reynisfjara beach (yep, that’s the one with the phallus shaped rock), only to be found dead a few hours later.

A tragic incident for sure, but totally avoidable:

There are massive warning signs all over the place, about the sneaker waves and undercurrents that have caused a number of deaths. But too many people don’t seem to take them seriously. And reportedly, even those who are trying to warn others often get ignored, ridiculed or scolded at.

So pleeeease, in the name of all that’s holy, if you travel to Iceland, don’t be that stupid person who needs to be rescued, or even worse, returns home in a coffin.

Just a few very basic rules:

* Don’t turn your back on the Ocean
* Don’t go where there are no traces in the sand, as the waves obviously reach there
* Don‘t play tag with the waves, it‘s not cool
* In general: Check weather and road conditions before you leave the house
* And ffs, respect warning signs. They’re there for a reason.

Be safe people, and have some common sense. That selfie is not worth risking your life, or those of others.

(All shots taken with a telephoto lens from a safe distance)

Also, today was my next doc’s visit with new X-rays. And I’m thrilled to announce that from now on, I am allowed to walk and drive again! I'm not healed completely yet, but making good progress. And after more than four months of being confined to my home, it feels like breaking some enormous chains to be able to work and make plans again. ⠀
⠀
In the next days, I’ll be contacting all my dear clients that have been waiting for their photo session so patiently, and I can’t wait to make their dream session come true.⠀
⠀
Do you want to see what I did first thing today? Let me know, and I might share it in the stories 🙂⠀

From a nightly explorer tour across the highlands with my dear friend and artiste extraordinaire @josefina_morell 🙂⠀
⠀
We’re past equinox and winter is sending its unmistakable precursors. We’re entering what many like to call the „quiet time of the year“. Ironically for me, it’s the other way around this time, because after a summer of forced inactivity, I am finally allowed to walk again in my cast/boot thingy. And I’m heading outside like a champ, with my robofoot probably giving off a very strange picture to the deer in the forest…⠀
⠀
And although it stings a little to know that I definitely missed out on summer 2021, I’m looking forward to what lies ahead and working relentlessly on a few bigger projects, hoping to be able to share something soon. Which also explains my lack of words today 😬⠀
⠀
How about you, are you looking forward to the darker days of the year or do you dread this time?⠀

Here’s the story from when we went swimming with Here’s the story from when we went swimming with the car (which you also voted for a while ago):⠀
⠀
I have a very good Icelandic friend named Guðrún, whom I can’t say enough good things about. She’s always up for adventure, we laugh all the time and apart from that, she’s the most ahhh-ma-zing cook! 😋⠀
⠀
So more often than not, when I’m researching a new photo location, we go exploring together. And sometimes we end up in the weirdest of situations…⠀
⠀
…as was the case on this day:⠀
⠀
"That deserted black beach looks promising on Google Maps, and there seems to be a path there. So let’s go!"⠀
⠀
…⠀
⠀
"Well, it sure rained a lot the last days. But thank God we’re on an off-road vehicle. No problem to handle those puddles!"⠀
⠀
…⠀
⠀
"Is there still a path?"⠀
⠀
…⠀
⠀
"The water is up to our doorsill, there’s a lagoon in front of us and we’re all alone here. Let’s turn around."⠀
⠀
You see, in Iceland, everybody knows or is kin to somebody everywhere. But on our way back through the tiny village, the only person we encountered was an elderly man with walking poles. This gentleman promptly climbed into our car and promised to show us the way across the ford, because "there always is one!". So off we went again, all the while learning about mutual friends&family, as you do in Iceland…⠀
⠀
An hour and a gazillion of puddles later („puddles“ being a slight understatement), with the car all but floating and 90% of the water still in front of us, the gent had to admit that there is probably a clog somewhere, which "has definitely never happened before!" …so we decided to turn around once more and leave the rest of this adventure for another day. ⠀
⠀
After all, we didn’t end up in the news as another stupid-tourists-that-got-saved headline (hint: there’s a lot of them).⠀
⠀
If there has to be a moral to this story, then I guess it’s this one: You either win or you learn. And although admittedly, not all lessons are as much fun as this one, they all come to help you make better choices in the future 😉⠀
⠀
How about you, do you like exploring unknown places?
